Top 50 Twee Youtube Music Videos
(Fixing it!)
Come! Come!
It is a great afternoon with our super pop heroes!
Self-rules. Fan-videos and fan-made movie soundtracks are ok because they are teh awesome, but no live shows recorded with cell phones, no still pictures and no random photo slides (photo slides are ok if the photos are pretty and not just random band photos). Also, no Los Campesinos. Don´t like the main dude´s hair.
I will allow myself one exception to each rule just so I can have a nice neurotic excuse to post Puzzle Pieces by Tiger Trap.
And I´m writing in english despiste the rest of the blog being in portuguese because talking to the whole world is the only way to find one good soul who enjoys Twee (brazilians do not like Twee, that´s a fact. Also, our president don´t like Obama's cucumber)
=
#50 Speedmarket Avenue - Way Better Now
I´m not that totally sure that Speedmarket Avenue is Indie Pop and it is even more probable that they are not twee, so I´ll just leave it here on the last spot because I like this band so much. (in my defense, it does have a boy/girl duo, which is pretty twee and it is a good way to welcome new faces to the genre, because I can make them hope that the other 49 videos are this user-friendly).
Actually, watching the video now, I am seeing a lot of twee stuff. That blouse the dude wear and the girl riding the little zebra stuff. Yeah, Twee as fuck, baby.
#49 The Special Places - How To Stuff A Wild Bikini
This is a kind of a Tullycraft Cover (I say "kind of" because The Special Places are Tullycraft members). I´m putting this on the last positions because it breaks my "non-poorly recorded live videos" rules. But I would so incredibly love to see this version on a recorded album. It is just so cute.
#48 Another Sunny Day - I´m In Love With a Girl
Ok, maybe I shoulnd´t have made this a "top list" since I am getting guilty with all the meritocracy, every music here is so great. And this is another one that I´m putting on the last ones just because it isn´t really a video, just the album cover with a cool effect on it, but man, this is one of my favorite songs.
#47 Tiger Trap - Puzzle Pieces
Great. Last one that isn´t actually a video. Now I will have to actually start thinking about which video is better. Aw.
But hey, screw that, look how great is this song! Tiger Trap is one of the best bands of all the time, if some evil witch would turn all the bands in the world into Tiger Trap cover bands, it would suck a little, but I think I would still start an orkut community saying how much I love the evil witch.
#46 Luisa Mandou Um Beijo - Bauhaus Today
Luisa Mandou Um Beijo is a really good brazilian band. Probably the only brazilian band I regularly listen. I think this video is kinda too artsy too me, but listen to the voice of the singer. Also, as far as I know, the band didn´t knew there was actually a band called "Bauhaus", so they made up this ficticious band "Bauhaus Today" that the protagonist of the song would hear when at home. Pretty neat, really.
#45 Tullycraft - Georgette Plays a Goth
Another Tullycraft song. Tullycraft is just so good with their female background. And I keep thinking how much I would love to find a goth waitress. Yeah, that would be great.
#44 Saturday Looks Good To Me - Money In The Afterlife
How much I like this band totally depends on how I wake up. Today I woke up with them at #44.
But this song have some really good moments on it and I´m glad that I found a musical genre that I like so much that a band this good is the one that I sometimes don´t have patiente to listen to.
#43 Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
If there is this division between Twee and Indie pop, then Death Cab for Cutie is on the wrong side of it, but it is so cute, so I will just hate the haters. Look at them! Just look at them! Aren´t they just adorable?
#42 La Casa Azul - Superguay
I have no idea what a Superguay is, but is there any possible way to not fall in love with this band? *sigh* so much beautiful people on this world.
#41 The Vaselines - Dying For It
Vaselines is that band that made covers of Nirvana even before Nirvana existed, that´s how much Nirvana fans they are.
Actually, it is a shame that they have so few songs, Kurt Cobain was fucking on the spot for enjoying this band so much. How a guy can kill himself by listening to the vaselines? It is insane. Even if the song is called "Dying for it"... ok.
#40 Dressy Bessy - You Should Try To Kiss Her
Hey, funny story, Dressy Bessy used to be on this spot, but on the related videos I found out this and I just liked them so much and so I´m putting it here. Also, at first I thought "But I´m a Cheerleader" was the band name and I thought "what a clever name" and now I realize it is the movie, and LOOK AT THIS! IT IS FUCKING DRESSY BESSY! Oh, I love the world. Right now I want so much to watch this movie.
#39 Camera Obscura - I Love My Jeans
One of my favorite bands of all the times. I am so obsessed with this voice that if I could become a super villain that collects people´s voices I would probably go after this one depriving the world from her awesome songs but having it all to me! Me! ME! And then some super hero would kick my ass. =(
#38 The Pastels - Crawl Babies
And here it is our first C86 band. C86 was a NME cassette compilation when NME was a bunch of communists instead of the cool kids they are today. Anyway, C86 was the tape that got the whole twee genre started. It was about punk rock bands that didn´t have the punk rock aesthetic or macho attitude. In other words, it was punk for those of us who aren´t idiots.
Anyway, what can I say? The Pastels are awesome, look at how the vocalist has that look that the pussy in boots have on Shrek 2. Also, consider that the origin of this thing is really punk 79, how great it is that normal looking kids listened to punk and decided to write cute love songs? I think it says something very important about these movements and the definition of rebellion.
#37 Heavenly - Trophy Girlfriend
Heavenly wasn´t IN the C86 compilation, but the spirit is pretty much it. Heavenly is also one of my favorite bands. They have another song more ahead on this list. Meh, I´m running out of things to say. I just like this a lot. Also ahead on the list is Talulah Gosh. Heavenly is actually half Talulah Gosh if I´m not mistaken.
#36 Velocity Girl - Audrey´s Eyes
Velocity Girl got their name, obviously, from the Primal Scream song. But you already knew that, don´t you? Also, look at how this is a very 90s band unlike the Pastels and Heavenly. The difference, I think, is that being alternative is something more mainstream and so they look a lot less weird by making this kinds of music.
#35 The Brunettes - B.A.B.Y
Since we are doing a timeline stuff, I thought it was fit to put The Brunettes here. Just to make a comparison. Nowadays thre isn´t really something we can call "alternative". Not that this is bad, I like A LOT the fact that it is easy to find good songs. It is all pop anyway, the difference is that these guys don´t have money to play on the radio. Now they don´t need money to play on the radio, so we can be pop all we like. Also, boy/girl duo! S2!
#34 Club 8 - Whatever You Want
I don´t know if I like this video, but this band is excelent. Her voice is incredible. I usually joke that I only listen music from girls that don´t know how to sing, but this is a very good singer.
#33 The Wedding Present - You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends
They look just so happy. *sigh* I´m jealous.
#32 Zucchines - Imaginary Friend, Vol. 1
I think they are brazilian too. Anyway, very cute, very lo-fi, I wonder what happened to this band. I think they have a clear potential to be one of the best twee bands around. This song have a really good sense of momentum... or something.
#31 The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Everything With You
My fear about them is that they try too hard to emulate C86 stuff, but it is undeniable how good they sound. In a way, it is a good that their album was released in 2009 and they look like something from 1989, even if it does sound a little fake, it is, again, very good music and it is good to like a band that you can actually hope to go to a show.
#30 The Vaselines - Molly´s Lips
Again, Kurt Cobain was on the spot for enjoying this band and I very much like Nirvana´s version of this song. This is one of their best songs. Kudos to Kurt for making this so famous. And this don´t look much like a video, but I think it is a cool simple way of making a vinyl song available for us technological people.
#29 Marine Girls - A Place In The Sun
This is one great band that is annoyingly hard to find songs. For situations like this that I like that the whole alternative/mainstream line is vanishing. I like Marine Girls so much! And look how "punky" looks one of them and not even that can make them not make cute songs. Twee is a such a powerful force on the universe.
#28 The Apples In Stereo - Tidal Wave
The Apples In Stereo are a rare example of twee band that actually is lasting and has created fans outside the genre, but you know, it have its ups and downs.
#27 Architecure In Helsinki - Do The Whirlwind
Architecture In Helsinki are one of the most creative bands out there and one of the great examples of the whole Twee premisse that being artistic doesn´t mean being gloomy and being pop doesn´t mean being shallow. We can do everything. We are that cool.
#26 The Go! Team - Junior Kickstart
Still on the whole "artistic doesn´t mean gloomy", The Go! Team is a musical achievement, I belive. The fact that stuff like this is even possible, blows my mind. Also, pacman! <3 style="font-weight:bold;">#25 The Shop Assistants - I Don't Want To Be Friends With You
Another C86 band with everything awesome that comes with it. This is probably my favorite from the original C86 compilation! It has this great Blondie´s first album feel.
#24 The All Girl Summer Fun Band - Car Trouble
The All Girl Summer Fun Band is one of the bestestestest bands of the whooooole wide world. I wish they had more videos! Just listens to this! He broke her heart and her car won´t start! I mean... I mean... I mean... aw man!
And the drummer looks like an ex-girlfriend.
#23 Husky Rescue - Hurricane (Don´t Come Knocking)
I´m not sure if Husky Rescue belongs to this list (and yeah! There is more of them ahead!), but these songs are great and beautiful and lo-fi and oohh, pretty pictures! And cute voice! And again, this song is just so beautiful.
#22 Tullycraft - Molly´s Got A Crush On Us
Are you ready for more Tullycraft? Aren´t we all just always ready for more Tullycraft? And this video is really great, with all that beautiful people drinking and having fun and Tullycraft always gets it right on the Lyrics. They are kind of our side that makes fun of people. I mean, it is a genre about broken hearts and cute people, we don´t have much opportunity to make fun of people.
#21 Camera Obscura - If Looks Could Kill
Hum, a lot of bands will start repeating now. Oh well, if you got this far, you are already in love with the thing? But I´m still saving the best for last. And yeah, there is one more Camera Obscura ahead! Her voice is just that beutiful.
#20 Vivian Girls - Tell The World
Apparently the Vivian Girls are famous. I for one don´t understand why at all. Anyway, I like them a lot, I read somewhere that My Bloody Valentine was influenced by Twee, well, we´re getting some of that influence back, thank you very much kind sirs. :) (I like My Bloddy Valentine too, but they definetly don´t belong here. Oh well, Vivian Girls surely do). And this videoclip is just hilarious. Watch it to the end!
#19 Luisa Mandou Um Beijo - Julia
For those gringos out there. This song has a very cute lyrics, goes something along the way: "Wake up late, Julia, you never remembers that one day I will arrive bringing the sun".
Very cute song, really. And the photo montage is a college work, I think. Very well done people.
#18 Theoretical Girl - The Boy I Left Behind
You know, for a genre that is supposed to be so tied to the 80s, it is amazing that this is one of my favorite songs. But what can I say? It is really that good. I don´t even know if Theoretical Girl has her album out yet. When I heard this the first time, it was totally on myspace. Great Rose Melberg feel. And every time I get sad the first urge I have is to find a show like this, you know? Girl, acoustic guitar, very very beautiful songs.
#17 The Brunettes - If You Were An Alien
Yeah, so, talking about girls, acoustic stuff and beautiful songs. Also has a boy in it. The Brunettes kinda of makes me bissexual, but I would only do them both at the same time. Yep, that´s my rules.
#16 La Casa Azul - Como Un Fan
Another La Casa Azul, now, a Fan I know what it is, because I´m totally one. :,)
By the way, this song have very very very good lyrics.
#14 Rose Melberg - Take Some Time
Rose Melberg is one of the most important names on this list, if not THE most important. Every band she makes, it is a icon of everything we love about Twee.
She was in Tiger Trap, in Go Sailor, in The Softies and now look at this! Her solo career is also great.
And this is one song that much like The Softies, you have to let it grow. It doesn´t have that instant impact of pop songs, so do yourself a favor and if it looks too slow or whatever, just hang in there, this is one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard.
#13 The Go! Team - Ladyflash
It´s been too long since the last The Go! Team? Not really, right? Great band! This is actually the song I was referring to when I said that it blows my mind to think it is even possible. I don´t even want to begin to think how they recorded all this.
#12 Au Revoir Simone - Fallen Snow
This videoclip is so Twee that I think it will explode... you know, in an explosion of open fields and flowers. It is actually a very beautiful video and the song is also very very good.
#11 Husky Rescue - Summertime Cowboy
Again, not sure if they belong on this list, but watch the video! There´s totally a twee vibe in an ET cowboy!
#10 Architecture In Helsinki - Wishbone
Oh boy, the top 10!
Anyway, this is a very cute song by Architecture In Helsinki. It is a band that takes a lot of riscks and it pays off most of the times! This song is great!
#9 Talulah Gosh - Bringing Up Baby
I just realized Amelia Fletcher is 3 times on the top 10. And just look at the beggining of this video! Makes me want to watch this movie and I´m really not into the whole old movie thing.
By the way, Talulah Gosh was not IN C86, but they are so much the embodiment of the genre that people often makes that confusion. It is really hard to think about twee without Talulah Gosh, it just makes sense to think that they are everywhere.
And I cannot find the lyrics of this song, but someone on the Youtube comments say the chorus is: "Sweetens her tea with jam / takes 5 baths a day / bringing up baby!"
#8 Vivian Girls - Where Do You Run To
If you don´t completely fall in love with them on the chorus, then you sir, yes, you, are not a good person. Oh, according to the guy who uploaded this, this video is from another band that, aham, "blows".
This song really shows their shoegaze and noise influences, but it is twee baby, soooo twee.
Really, it´s not noisy enough to be noise.
#7 Beat Happening - Pine Box Derby
Beat Happening is supposedly the band that took Twee to america, but I think it is very different from the rest. It is different from any band I ever heard don´t matter the genre. They are one of the icons! One of the best! They should be remembered not only on Twee lists, they should be remembered everywhere! Just listen to this! I mean, cmon! Listen to this!
#6 Camera Obscura - Let´s Get Out Of This Country
You are not tired of Camera Obscura, right? It is impossible to be tired of Camera Obscura. And this song totally relates to me, I mean, living in Brazil and stuff. And this song is just what Camera Obscura is all about. It is this cute sadness, it is nice and warm and just slightly melancholic.
It is about finding a cathedral city where we can live and feel at home. This can´t be wrong. It is maybe one of the most noble feeling of this world. It is a little thing, but it is gigantic. Searching for home is always hard.
#5 Velocity Girl - Crazy Town
Velocity Girl at its best. This band has a great garage feel without losing all the cuteness. And it has a very underground feel without stop being all poppy and catchy. It is what twee is all about. Do it yourself, but without losing your soft side on the process.
#4 The All Girl Summer Fun Band - Later Operator
When I began this list, I thought this would end up on first. It really makes me feel that the whole genre was created just for these two girls and that making home videos dancing happy to the songs are waaaay more important then, I don´t know, making top lists. I just get this feeling that these two girls deserve the all girl summer fun band much more than me, but I am happy that the magic of the internets allow them to share it with me.
#3 Heavenly - Our Love Is Heavenly
Just a great example of what Twee is all about. It is just one of those songs that you can hear it over and over and over again for days (I know I have). It has all that innocence and no cinicism or no excuse for being yourself and really REALLY being yourself, not like, dressing like you are in an army of apathy and shouting at your mum that she doesn´t understand you.
My mum understand me, it´s my friends who doesn´t. =P
#2 Beat Happening - Indian Summer
It is said that this is the most covered twee song of all the time. I heard, I dunno, 3 or 4 versions, but this is always the best. His voice is the best and no one can cover it. This song is just great and it has this atmosphere of a lazy sunny afternoon.
#1 Talulah Gosh - Talulah Gosh
Again, this band is everything the genre is. It is kind of dorky and nerdy and I mean, watch the All Girl Summer Fun video that was about the two sisters doing a home video to a song they like and this one, a "professional" video for a "professional" band and it is the same thing!! Talulah Gosh gets it. It is all about being happy. And the lyrics, oh, look at the lyrics. It is about deceiving itself either. It is about believing you are a pop star, but knowing you are just someone who is jumping around the house. Oh, and you can lie to everyone, but please, please don´t lie to me.
